Oznacza to bowiem, że zostałeś zaakceptowany, nie jesteś już całkiem obcy, a twój rozmówca darzy cię sympatią. W stosunku do osób, z którymi nie łączą ich cieplejsze relacje, Brytyjczycy odnoszą się zazwyczaj super grzecznie i poprawnie.

Getting British sense of humour - a short guide
We are all familiar with the phrase “English sense of humour”. Generally speaking, it is used to describe a very specific sense of humour, a bit sarcastic, full of irony, with elements of self-deprecation and understatements. The Brits love laughing at themselves and other people and they never miss an opportunity to have this kind of fun. Unfortunately, as they tend to do that with a deadpan face, foreigners may have a hard time deciding whether their British interlocutor is being serious or if they are joking. Irony and sarcasm - the basis of the English sense of humour
The inhabitants of The British Isles show an exceptional partiality for sarcastic and ironic remarks that constitute the base of their specific sense of humour. A Brit will most probably comment on a terrible, rainy weather with the words “Oh, it’s delightful!”.
It is also typical for the British to say the exact opposite of what they actually think in order to make their point. Majority of the world resorts to irony only in particular situations. The Brits, however, find every occasion suitable. A person unaware of that fact may thus find them a bit rude.
Self-deprecation and understatements
In order to protect themselves from overwhelming emotions, the British very often choose to express themselves in quite a reserved manner. A typical conversation in English will be filled with words like “actually”, “quite”, “rather” and “a bit” that make the overall tone of what is being said weaker. When faced with a serious problem, a Brit will probably describe the situation with words “a spot of a bother” or “a bit of a pickle”. It’s worth to keep that in mind and try to get the true meaning of what a British person is saying. The black British sense of humour is also shown in the way they openly joke about themselves and the unfortunate circumstances they need to struggle with.
What do the Brits usually joke about?
The answer is - about themselves. Putting themselves down and mocking their own shortcomings is yet another keystone of the English sense of humour. The Brits hate pomposity and boasting. As a rule then, they depreciate their own achievements and openly laugh at their own appearance, age, accent, baldness, a weird name or other prominent features. Also, they tend to treat in the same way people they are fond of. If your British friend starts to mock you and tease you a little bit, you should be glad. It is a sign that you have been accepted, you are not perceived as a total stranger anymore and your interlocutor actually likes you. The British usually treat people with whom they have no close relationship in a super-polite manner.
